Hundreds of Filipino nurses have gone on to build successful careers in many parts of the world. Many more are hoping to follow in their footsteps. I'm one of those people who've changed careers and is now trying to work out a successful career in nursing where demand is high in most parts of the world.
Becoming a nurse is not the end goal of my aspirations. I've learned to love the work and I try to give it my best everytime. But becoming a nurse is just a stepping stone, a path I have chosen that I hope would allow me to do the things I really truly love: travel, writing and building a family.
There's a bit of excitement and anxiety being caught in-between careers. It can't be helped if my heart sputters over a past life--one that is full of stories of people, places and events--and then leaps in anticipation over a new chosen path--one where a caring heart takes precedence over everything else.
Leaving journalism, which I breathed for a little over than 10 years is neither easy nor difficult. There were no sleepless nights; there were no drinking sprees either. Making a choice to embrace nursing as a new career came naturally like waking up in the morning and brushing your teeth. Making the decision is like finding yourself and listening to your heart the first time--it just grabs you by the soul and you realize where your place is in this world.
Yet even though I've already lost my soul to my new career, my veins bleed a little for the life I used to wake up to the past decade. My fingers ache, part from the repetitive stress of typing on a computer keyboard, but more for the words that I used to weave for a story.
So, today, I'm letting myself bleed a little, ache a little for the cause that has opened my eyes to the world. For tomorrow, my heart races to start a promising new cause, one that would usher me to embrace the world.
